Neushwanstien

Guilford College
Germany: Alp Dreams - Forest Tales and Mountain Trails

Our experience begins on Germany’s highest mountain and ends on the hiking trails of an Austrian
resort. Our home base will be in Munich.  Our days will take us up spectacular winter trails of Bavaria
and Austria: a hike to King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castle Neuschwanstein; a cog-rail and gondola ride up
the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze; a trek to the peaks above the gorgeous border
region of Berchtesgaden, with a resonant call to climb every mountain in Salzburg. On our way, we’ll
recite odes to magic mountains and follow roads to historical Alpträume. Our evenings will lure us
into dark mountain tales of the Brothers Grimm, Thomas Mann, Marlen Haushofer and other
German, Austrian, and Swiss authors and filmmakers. The literature and films will be accessible in
both German and English, so all are invited on this summer’s end journey.
